A Strange Series of Disappearances, Sinister or Supernatural?
The first case happened on November 12, 1945 when a 74-year-old mountain guide named Middie Rivers got ahead of his group only to disappear. He had been last seen not far from U.S. Route 9 in the area of the Long River Trail Road.
Eighteen-year-old Bennington college student Paula Welden vanished while taking a hike on December 1, 1946, on the Long Trail. She had been seen by other hikers but the young lady from Stamford Connecticut never turned up anywhere since.
The saddest of the disappearances occurred in the middle of October in 1950 when eight year old Paul Jepson went missing from a farm where he and his mother were at. The mother claimed she left him alone to play, but he disappeared. A massive search took place but Jepson was never located.
The last confimred disappearance happened on October 28, 1950, when Freida Langer had to turn back to go home after falling on a hike with her cousin. The fifty-three year old never made it back. Several searches were done and on May 12, 1951, herskeletal remains were found near Somerset Reservoir. Her manner and cause of death were never determined.
There were other stories about a group of three hunters missing during the last 1940s. There is also the case of a man named Tedford who on December 1, 1949, vanished from a crowded bus. These two have never really been able to be confirmed but they add to a mysterious legend about the place.
It is likely that some of the missing could have died of exposure or hypothermia. Paul Jepson could have been abducted or worse a victim of homicide. Others have suggested that the area is a little type of Bermuda Triangle.

An Alleged Trip to the Mall Ends in a Disappearance
On November 7th, 2001 10 year old Bianca Lebron was about to start her day at Elias Howe Elementary school in Bridgeport when she got into a beat up older model brown and tan van driven by a hispanic male estimated to be in his mid-twenties. He is described as a hispanic male in his mid-twenties, average height and build. Black kinky hair with sideburns and a large nose. Below is a picture of the type of van he might have driven. Bianca is hispanic and is described as being 4'11, 115 pounds, black hair with hazel eyes. She has a mole/birthmark on her forehead. Her picture is shown at the left. Vanished Without A Trace
Perhaps no case in state history with the exception of the Martha Moxley murder in Greenwich has received more national attention than the disappearance of ten year old Connie Smith. During July 16th, 1952, the young Wyoming girl who was staying at Camp Sloane in Salisbury had wandered from the campgrounds after some rough play with fellow campers. She was seen heading for the village of Lakeville walking along Route 44 in Salisbury, thumb extended looking for a ride. That was the last recollection anyone has had of the young camper being alive. Following the disappearance, there was a massive manhunt. Police scoured the New York/ Connecticut border for clues and her possible remains. Police also had numerous potential suspects which included the camp cook, the camp caretaker, nearby workers and deliverymen. Eventually the case went national on the Art Linkletter show and while it garnered much needed publicity for the case, it produced many dead end leads and false confessions. Now fifty years later, there is still no trace of Connie Smith. Her father still ever hopeful, never gave up on trying to find her alive. Author Michael Dooling recently wrote a book about her disappearance named, "Clueless in New England" .
Is There A Connection Between the Disappearances and Deaths of these Women in New Haven?
Another case of a woman with substance abuse issues was that of Cassandra Mead of East Haven. She was found strangled to death in late August of 2011 at Union and Water Street. What is unusual is that the area is a block away from the New Haven Police Department. The 21 year old had a criminal past and had suffered from Bi-Polar disorder. The murder was particularly brazen because it is near the downtown and so close to a police presence.

Are there Similarities in the Disappearances of Three Young Men?
Keith Lalima was a father of a young child who lived with his girlfriend at his mother's house. On May 7th 1981, he had an argument with an individual outside the Village Green Cafe in Norwich. He was last seen walking in the direction of where he lived, the nightclub he was last seen at was located at Maple Street and West Main Street. It is possible that the person he was seen having a confrontation with could have had something to do with his disappearance.
Charles Lassell Jr, was nineteen years old when he was last seen at the intersection of Coogan Boulevard and Jery Browne Road in the town of Stonington. He was waiting for a bus to take him to college. He never did take the bus and the last person to see him alive was his father on October 27, 1981.
Kenneth Reed was believed last seen at his family's residence in the town of Norwich on March 24th, 1989. He had no known problems or enemies. His car was found later that night but he was not in it. There is no link between the disappearances of the three except location. Norwich and Stonington are not far from each other. Kenneth Reed worked in Norwich despite living well over an hour away.
